Halong Bay a natural world wonder

Located in northern Vietnam,Halong Bay is home to some 1,900 islands of all shapes and sizes.Of these,around 1,000 islands have names.Made of worn limestone,these steep,strangely shaped islands rise like pillars from green seas.Most of the islands are uninhabited by people,but home to a wealth of plants,birds and small animals.

On December 17,1994,UNESCO recognized Ha-long Bay as a world natural heritage for its natural beauty at the 18th meeting of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in Thailand.On December 12,2000,Ha-long Bay was recognized as world natural heritage for the second time based on its geological value.As well as be-ing spectaculary beautiful,Halong Bay has exceptional geological,ecological and cultural value.

A Vietnamese legend tells how,long ago,a mighty dragon dove into the sea in the area that is now Halong Bay,slashing and scattering huge rocks with its giant tail.The rocks fell into the ocean and formed the islands that now form this amazing archipelago.

Halong Bay’s  islands contain some fantastic caves,including Surprise Cave,Heavenly Palace Cave and Three Palaces Cave.Visitors flock to these caves to mar-vel their beautiful rock formations,some of which are lit with colored lights.

The best way to explore Halong Bay is by boat,and there are hundreds of varieties to choose from.Many tourists choose to spend a night in the bay,onboard a luxury junk.Waking up surrounded by magical islands and calm seas is an unforgettable experience.Visitors can also explore the bay n kayaks.Some islands feature sea caves and inner lagoons that are accessible by kayak.
