To born and bred Saigonese, the city has its own beauty from the streets, landscapes, people’s characteristics and the colorful hustle and bustle of daily life. However, the city has a view that not many Saigonese notice or rarely have a chance to even contemplate – from above. From balconies of many high-rise buildings the city captures a different kind of beauty without its naturally animated atmosphere at ground level.

A number of years ago the idea of drinking coffee whilst watching the sunset and a sparkling city view at night was a dream to many people. Maybe just a thought of rich people who can spend US$25 on drinking coffee at the Panorama Cafe on top of the 33-storey Saigon Trade Center in Ton Duc Thang Street in District 1 or at the Skyview Cafe on level 13 of the Diamond Plaza department store at the corner of Le Duan Boulevard and Pham Ngoc Thach Street.

However, apart from those two venues, Saigon has some newly-built skyscrapers, high-rise buildings and hotels where people can admire the view while drinking coffee with friends or savoring a nice meal at an affordable cost.

There is: Saigon Saigon Bar on level 9 of the Caravelle Hotel Saigon on Lam Son Square in District 1 with drinks from VND90.000 and live music; Night Spot on level 23 of the Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers on Dong Khoi Street in District 1 offering beverages from VND130.000 and food from VND140.000 and a live Filipino band; Rooftop Garden of the Rex Hotel Saigon on Nguyen Hue Boulevard in District 1; Pool Bar on level 21 of the Renaissance Riverside Hotel Saigon on Ton Duc Thang Street in District 1 which offers drinks from VND130.000-300.000 and food from VND300.000; Cloud 9 Bar on levels 6 & 7 of the building at 2bis Cong Truong Quoc Te in HCMC’s District 3 with drinks from VND100.000.

Even cheaper options are Cat Dang Karaoke and Cafe on level 6 at 387-389 Hai Ba Trung Street in District 3 is an ideal choice with drinks starting from VND25.000.

There is also of course the hot new venue which has already attracted a lot of attention of city folk - the Saigon Sky Deck observatory on the 49th floor of the city’s tallest building, the 68-storey Bitexco Financial Tower on Ho Tung Mau in HCMC’s District 1. The deck, which opened last month, gives visitors a panoramic view of the city from 178 meters above ground level.

People can have a closer look through some telescopes or use interactive touch screens to see pictures and information on the history, culture and architecture of the city.

The Sky Deck, which is open from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM., costs VND200.000 for adults and VND130.000 for children under 16 years old.

In the near future, the Sky Deck will launch a coffee shop to serve visitors who want to enjoy the view and have a beverage at the same time.

Sometimes we need to pause due to the busy pace of our lives and relax and think about what we will do on Friday. That’s the perfect time to sit in the sky watching the sun go down and busy city dwellers without a care in the world.
