Run around Samui for fun

Samui Island Marathon 2011 is back, 18 September, offering Bt150,000 in prize money for winners in six race categories.

Now in its second year, the 42 km race is hosted by Bangkok Airways and should attract 2,000 to 3,000 participants.

Last year, there were 1,600 participants of which 1,400 were Thais and 200 were foreigners.

This year’s event will feature six categories: Full marathon (42.195 km); half marathon (21.1 km); quarter marathon (10.55 km); local students, 12 to 14 years (5 km); other students, 12 to 14 years (5 km) and a 2 km fun run.

Up until 16 September, registration fees are: Full marathon Bt700; half marathon Bt500 increasing on 17 September by another Bt100.

Fees in the other four categories are: Bt300 for quarter marathon, Bt100 for student marathon and Bt100 for the fun run. For Samui students paticipation s free .

Organisers hope to boost tourism to the island through the event, which has the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Koh Samui Municipality and Tourism Association of Koh Samui.

“Sports visitors are very resilient,” a local hotelier on the island told TTR Weekly. “They still turn up even when there are political problems in the country and they usually travel with their families.”

Most of the international participants come from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

Bangkok Airways offers a Bt9,200 three-day/ two-night package, which includes roundtrip air ticket (economy class) Bangkok-Samui inclusive of surcharges and taxes, two nights’ accommodation with daily breakfast, roundtrip transfers from airport to hotel, one-way transfer to Nathon Pier,18 September, for the start of the race and travel insurance.

Hotels featured include: Samui Palm Beach Resort (Bophut Beach); Mercure Samui Fenix (Lamai Beach); Imperial Samui Beach Resort (Chaweng Noi); Gulich Samui (Lamai Beach); Sara Samui Resort and Spa (Choengmon Beach). The cost is valid from 12 September to 21 September 2011. Currently, PG provides almost 30 flights daily on the Bangkok-Samui route.
